The client asked Karp Associates to update their 40 year-old attached, age restricted unit that was all original. We felt the possibilities were endless especially since deciding to employ the “gut renovation” method of remodeling. The challenge in this case was creating a unit that was going to be senior-friendly, attractive and glamorous. However, as this unit needed to be set up for future aging in place, we needed to consider the senior aspects of design.
As the unit was three stories with stairs, the first redesign was locating an elevator path that would allow everything but the elevator cab to be installed at this point in time. We accomplished this by reworking the interior space from the basement up to create the center elevator core. The next goal was to widen doorways, open the kitchen area (aesthetically important), install easy to reach cabinets and appliances, install all new bathrooms with low slip tile including blocking for grab bars, large shower with bench, new HVAC, and new electric. This all needed to be accomplished while making the unit attractive enough for the client not to feel it was built for “old people”.
The finished home now had the aesthetic the client wanted along with the future aging accommodations in place they will need in the years to come.
